"Someone told us that Duchamp was in the habit of suiting up in the morning, leaving home with a briefcase, and walking round the block as if he were just one more commuter on his way to work."

Almost certainly not true. I spent my grad school years immersed in the minutia of Duchamp's life, esp. in NYC, and never heard of this. Check the Gough-Cooper and Caumont daily timeline (a blog post-facto!) for details, or lack thereof.
