Schumann turned from playing to composing after his strength exercises damaged his hands:
Robert Schumann was so enthusiastic and adamant about becoming a professional pianist that he permanently injured his right hand by putting weights on his fingers to strengthen them. This in turn ruined any chances that he had in pursuing his dream of becoming a pianist. But he did not completely give up on a career in music. He decided that he would become a composer instead.
